The most important part of successful toilet learning is to remember it starts with the child. Effective toilet learning doesn’t begin until the child shows signs that they are physically, cognitively, and emotionally ready. There is no standard or imposed “right” age or stage to start toilet learning. Just as each child learns to walk on their own timetable, each child becomes ready for toilet learning in their own time. There are also many cultural differences in handling toilet learning; therefore, it’s important that families and educators effectively communicate regarding these issues, so that they can best support the child in this process.
