If breathing difficulty remains or worsens, there’s continuous spasmodic coughing, increasing anxiety or confusion, the child is struggling or gasping for breath, or lips or fingernails are darkening, we will adhere to the following protocol:
a staff member will stay with the child at all times
911 will be called
simultaneously, the parent or emergency contact will be called
the child will be kept sitting upright and encouraged to take slow, deep breaths
the medication indicated on the AAP will be given
in the unlikely event of breathing stopping, the child’s teacher or an administrator will administer CPR (all our staff are trained in CPR) and continued until paramedics arrive
