Tooth decay is the most common chronic disease of childhood. It is painful and can inhibit learning, speech, and eating. We are required by EEC to assist children in brushing their teeth when they are in our care for more than four hours or if they consume a meal at school. Each child is supplied a personal toothbrush, which is stored in sanitary conditions and replaced every three months or after the child has been out sick. Preschool children brush their teeth with toothpaste for two minutes after lunch and are instructed to brush their tongue as well. Toddlers brush their own teeth without toothpaste and with as much assistance as needed. Infants’ gums are cleaned with a damp disposable cloth after feeding.
