In the case of an accident resulting in a minor injury (such as a skinned knee), first aid will be administered by one of the educators in your child’s classroom. Wound treatment consists of washing with soap and water and applying bandages (we cannot use antibiotic ointment). Only an educator who is certified in First Aid is allowed to administer first aid to an injury, no matter how minor. After first aid is administered and the child is comforted, the teacher will complete an Injury Report describing the accident and treatment given [see Injury Report below]. The Injury Report will be given to the parent upon pick-up. Once the parent has signed the report, one copy will be given to the parent and one copy placed in the child’s file. The Injury Report will be reviewed by the director.
SERIOUS INJURY
In the unlikely event of a more serious injury (such as a seizure, a head injury or serious cut), First Circle staff will strictly follow the procedures outlined:
One teacher will begin administration of emergency first aid while the other educator takes the other children to another area or room.
Other staff will alert Administration to send assistance.
In a situation requiring (in First Circle’s judgment) immediate medical assessment and/or treatment, an administrator will call 911 with complete details of the injury. Simultaneously, an administrator will contact a parent, guardian, or emergency contact in the order designated by parents on the enrollment forms. Should time permit given the nature of the emergency, the parent will be given the option of meeting the child at First Circle or at the hospital.
Should the EMS decide it is necessary, we will transport the child via ambulance with their medical information to the nearest hospital.
A teacher or administrator will accompany the child to the hospital, bringing the child’s records, including signed parental permission for emergency medical treatment. This will allow the hospital to begin treatment immediately. The staff member will remain with the child until the family arrives.
Until the arrival of a parent, the medical personnel at the hospital will be in charge and make all decisions necessary for emergency treatment.
The educator who assisted will complete an Injury Report. The form will be signed by that educator and given to the parent to sign. Copies of the form will be given to the parent, placed in the child’s records, and sent to EEC.
